Banjo Hangout Newest 100 Clawhammer And Old-time Songs

From the playing of an Alabama fiddler, Paisley Hagood. Mostly he plays ABAB, which is kind of a treat after always playing AABBAABB. The high note in the A part gives it an ancient tone feeling for me.

It's rare to work on a jig with clawhammer. This is a sweet tune with a real Irish (to my ears) melody. Its minor tones make it a bit bittersweet.

Based on the playing of the Leslie Riddle and the Carter Family, the melody resembles White House Blues, an earlier song, and is included in a Tune of the Week featuring the latter. This recording was made when my husband, Kit, and I were performing locally at events focusing on local history. We liked choosing old-time tunes and songs and have a informal front porch sound. Plinky & Plunky with our mandolin and banjo played a lot together until Kit's stroke.

This old standard is played clawhammer style on a banjo I built which features internal-to-the-rim head tensioning, an internal resonator, and a Helix-style laid up rim made from carob wood.

From around the year 1800, Jamie Allen is named for the Northumbria bagpipe player, Jamie Allen. It is played as a march in New England these days.

A Tune of the Week with various titles and styles, but popularized most by a Canadian string band as Kiley's Reel, whose style is normally notey and energetic. For the final B part, I combined this clawhammer arrangement with its minstrel roots in the last time through on the B part.

This Tune of the Week, Echoes of the Ozarks comes from a 1920's recording by Kansas fiddler Sam Long. His fiddling was said to be smooth and rhythmic, but I found this piece too crooked to easily play along with him. It also has lots of syncopation. It's said to resemble Little Old Log Cabin in the Woods.
