Rob Keck, the current Director of Conservation with Bass Pro and former CEO of the NWTF, is on today's episode to discuss winter turkey hunting. Winter turkey hunting is a new concept to me, and from some of the stories that Rob shares with us in this episode it is something that I will be getting more familiar with over the coming months. Rob shares stories of encountering flocks of turkeys with 400 - 500 turkeys in it with "sub flocks" of up to 150 longbeards in them. Rob challenges these groups of mature Toms in them by making challenge purrs and gobbling. The rest of the story is something you'll just have to hear for yourself. Rob shares with us some of the states that have winter turkey seasons and how winter turkey hunting can compliment our spring turkey hunting as well.

In this episode, Lynne Frady with Team Frady and Mathews bows pro staff shares information with us about bowhunting wild turkeys. Lynne talks about minimizing movement while drawing the bow, using decoys, the effective bow range for a turkey, broadheads, minimal draw weights, and shot placement. She shares her thoughts about how crucial shot placement is when bowhunting wild turkeys because the vitals in a turkey are so small. A well placed arrow means the difference between a dead turkey and a wounded turkey that a hunter may not recover. Research always plays an important role in planning any adventure, especially a hunting adventure.  Planning a successful out of state turkey hunt is no different. In fact, once you've booked your out of state turkey hunting trip, the researching should continue so you can be sure you know everything there is to know about the area that you'll be hunting.  The time you spend researching your destination will help to ensure that you have a more enjoyable trip while you are there. In this episode, I share some of the ways that I use Google Earth to help me become a better turkey hunter. Google Earth is an irreplaceable scouting tool. By using your knowledge of wild turkey behavior and studying Google Earth to see how turkeys can use your hunting land for their needs for food, shelter, and water, you can greatly increase your odds of success.  I also like to use Google Earth while I'm hunting to make sure that I don't scare gobbling turkeys and to mark a turkey's last known location if I have to leave one in the woods. Pot and peg turkey calls seem like very simple instruments, but there are so many variables that go into making one that affect the sound quality of that call. This is part 2 of an interview that I did with Adam Prouty of Prouty Game Calls and Brent Rogers, a friend of the show. In this part of the interview, Adam shares with us the functional differences between 1 and 2 piece strikers and he gives us a few weatherproof pot and peg call combinations so we can still make turkey sounds while it is pouring rain.  Adam also shares the story of his most recent successful turkey hunt and one or two things that helped to make that hunt a success. In this part of the interview, Dave Owens shares some interesting tactics about how to hunt public land once you've chosen it, the politics that can sometimes play into hunting public land, and his pet peeve about taking pictures of wild turkey trophies.  

Dave Owens is a turkey hunter on a mission - a mission to kill a turkey in all 49 states that have turkeys. Dave is tackling this mission hunting primarily public land.  In this episode of The Turkey Hunter podcast, I interview Dave about how to choose public land for turkey hunting. Dave shares how he chooses public land, how he chooses spots for hunting on public land, and how he helps to minimize the chances of failure hunting these public lands.
